Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) Annual Conference in Sydney. This global event brought together thought leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and small business advocates from around the world to exchange insights and strategies for supporting small business growth in a sustainable and inclusive way.
A key theme of the conference was how governments and institutions can foster sustainable small business growth through targeted capital investment and skills development. Jurisdictions such as South Korea, Taiwan, Argentina, United States, and Germany presented innovative models that are delivering real results. What we learned from other countries:
- South Korea focuses on deep research and development investment and integrates small businesses into global supply chains, supported by strong public-private collaboration.
- Taiwan supports small manufacturers to move up the value chain through digital skills training and export facilitation.
- Argentina invests in inclusive entrepreneurship, including targeted funding and mentorship for women-led and rural small businesses.
- The United States has a robust network of Small Business Development Centres (SBDCs) that combine funding access with free advisory and education services.
- Germany continues to lead in apprenticeship-based training models that build a pipeline of skilled workers into small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The clear takeaway? Investment in people and capital—especially when adapted to local needs—pays dividends for small businesses and the broader economy. Here in Queensland, we are looking at how these learnings can shape our approach to supporting you to build a stronger, smarter, more sustainable small business sector for Queensland.
As always, our focus is on helping Queensland small businesses to succeed—whether by resolving disputes, navigating regulation, or connecting you with resources to grow. A big shout out to Brisbane Southside Chamber of Commerce, Brisbane North Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club of Brisbane Chinese Inc for allowing us to be involved in your events and to Central Highlands Development Corporation and Brisbane City Council for allowing us to participate in your small business awards and women in business events this month.
